A Message From Our President and Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends of Hope,

More than a quarter-century ago, a small group of volunteers envisioned a new concept in care for the people of southwest Florida. It was their belief that life could be lived better, even at its end. This charter group of Hope Hospice workers cared for perhaps 10 or 12 patients a day in the beginning.

Today Hope cares for more than 2,000 people each day, in a variety of special ways. Along with hospice care, we offer bereavement counseling; innovative art, music and massage and aroma therapies; long-term care and services for non-hospice patients; special care of teens and children; community education, and more.

Hope has received a number of major national awards for quality over the years, although our real focus is on caring for each individual, with their own needs and preferences, rather than “patients.” We honor and respect each person’s own decisions.

When a patient who has been completely non-responsive notices that a Hope volunteer has prepared a bouquet of flowers for her, and says, “Thank you – they are beautiful,” we know we are making a difference.

We look forward to many more years of providing excellence in comfort and care, regardless of the person’s ability to pay. We will continue to follow our guiding principles: accessibility to our services; high quality care; and the best stewardship of our resources.

We are able to support the community because the community generously supports Hope.

Samira K. Beckwith is the President and CEO of Hope. She has been appointed to Florida’s Long-Term-Care Policy Advisory Council, and has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
