Volunteer Mentors
Experienced Hope Volunteers are paired with new Hope Volunteers as peer mentors. A Hope Volunteer Mentor is there for new volunteers to share their experiences, share best practices, act as a sounding board, or just listen. Often talking with an experienced volunteer helps someone new to hospice volunteering to feel comfortable and provide the best care to our patients and families.
Research has shown that volunteers who mentor help build confidence and increase the chances of success in those they mentor. Mentoring has allowed Hope to identify volunteers who need more training, reassign volunteers if needed, and make sure that volunteers see the value of their volunteer time.
Interested Mentors are selected based on length of time with Hope, ability to work well with others, consistency in performance, and overall good volunteer habits. A training class is required to train new mentors on Hope expectations, stress management, active listening skills, and conflict resolution.
