Massage and Aromatherapy

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is both an art and a science, deeply rooted in the healing power of moving touch.  Hospice massage works in concert with the individual's diagnosis and condition, and may change over time.  Massage therapists work closely with Hope's entire interdisciplinary team to ensure that all treatment is appropriate for each individual's unique plan of care.

Physical Benefitsmassage

  • Relieves muscle tension and stiffness
  • Reduces muscle spasms
  • Promotes deeper and easier breathing
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Helps relieve tension-related headaches

Emotional Benefits

  • Fosters peace of mind and sense of well being
  • Promotes relaxation
  • Helps relieve mental stress and anxiety
  • Satisfies needs for caring, nurturing touch

Patients who receive care at one of our Hope Hospice Houses may benefit from our Water Therapy Room, where a Hydrosound tub provides gentle stimulation with sound waves. The effect is much like a whirlpool bath, but without the noise or movement.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy involves treating the mind, body and spirit using natural essential oils. The therapeutic oils are either applied directly by massage or are released into the air through a diffuser or aroma pillow. Some of the more common essential oils or blends include:

aromatherapy

  • Lavender (calming, therapeutic)
  • Lemon (refreshing, stimulating)
  • Peppermint (vitalizing, cooling)
  • Rose Petal (relaxing)
  • Tangerine (cheering, uplifting)
  • Tea Tree (cleansing, purifying)
